theres Dreaming-Eyes, our protagonist, and Bushy-Tail, her older sister, they say that Dreaming-Eyes loves finding places and leading people there, and then one day their parents tell them they are going to another planet. They arrive at the ship and have to wait, so they play hide and seek while they wait, Dreaming-Eyes follows some machines into the cargo bay, wondering where they're going, but then she gets trapped on the ship as it takes off.

Once upon a time, a little girl was playing hide and seek. She ran quietly, looking for a place to hide among the bushes and thickets. She found a spot and sat down; curled up with her knees to her chest, grinning (chuckles) and trying not to chuckle. She was called Dreaming Eyes, because she had big, sparkling eyes, and if you looked at them close enough and long enough, you could see through the clouds a host of twinkling colorful stars.

She loved playing hide and seek, especially with her big sister called Bushy Tail. Like a big squirrel, Bushy Tail had long, fluffy hair that she tied back when we were outside playing.

Bushy Tail was taught by their parents to look out for her sister always, always, always.

Dreaming Eyes loved her sister and the two were inseparable.

Dreaming Eyes listened closely from the thicket, as her sister finished counting.

"Ready or not! Her I come!."

Then she tried really hard to be quiet.

She heard her sister's footsteps echo in the woods; the cracking twigs and the rustling leaves. Bushy Tail snuck up to a tree and jumped up around it saying, "Gotcha!", but Dreaming Eyes wasn't there. She was giggling quietly to herself; curled up in a ball in the thicket. But then Bushy Tail heard her giggles. Her ears perked and she started to sneak slowly and ever so quietly, step by step by step, over to where she heard the giggle.

Dreaming Eyes heard the footsteps get closer and closer so she stopped giggling and tried to hold her breath; but just as she took her deep breath, the ticket parted and Bushy Tail's face appeared and she yelled "BOO!".

Dreaming Eyes jumped up laughing and began to run through the woods. Bushy Tail took chase and the two of them frolicked in the woods; playing happily with each other through the afternoon, until they heard their mother's voice yell out for them to come back home for dinner.

Dreaming Eyes was very curious; always looking for something new to learn. She looked at the hole in the wall and wondered where it went. She looked at the old, thick forest and wondered what lived in it. She looked up at the stars and wondered what their secrets were.

Her favorite game was hide and seek because the only thing she loved more than finding something new was leading someone else there. And whenever she went exploring, her big sister Bushy Tail came with her to watch over her; always... always...always.

They had very wealthy parents and their family went on trips all over the world. They loved to see ancient places. Once, it was a circle of tall, worn stones set in the ground keeping track of the sun. Once, it was a great arch in the sky; a gateway to a story that had long since passed. And once, it was a skeleton of an enormous tower; fallen hard on an old battlefield. And once, it was even the oldest, oldest place; a great circle of triangles pointing a way to a lost hope.

Dreaming Eyes could not always explore these places like she wanted to. Her parents would pull her to safety or back to the path; gentle but firm and all knowing. They would always tell her why. "The hole in the wall was really just a dead end"... or... "the forest only held the squirrels that her sister was named for"...or ..."the stars were too far away to tell her their secrets. If they could tell you their secrets, you wouldn't like them very much", they'd say.

Dreaming Eyes would pout and fuss, but they were her parents. She never liked the answers the gave. She would always try to go searching for things that her parents didn't know about, but they *always* knew; always called her before she got too far away

Bushy Tail would hug her sister and tell her that it would be okay and there were plenty of other places to explore and learn from. She promised her little sister that someday they would go together and find out what secrets the stars had to tell, no matter how scary or how bad they were.

Then, one day, their parents said that they were going to visit another planet! The sisters were so happy! A whole new world to explore, thought Dreaming Eyes. And her parents were taking them there themselves.

Bushy Tail loved to see her sister smile and the two danced around, holding hands, even as they packed away their favorite toys for the journey.

Bushy Tail and Dreaming Eyes watched as the great flying beast landed opening their mouths and calling them to go inside. "Not yet", their parents would say. "they're not calling for you." Dreaming eyes would wait and watch as other people moved into the beast with their bags. ... then they would rise into the air unfolding their strong, fiery(?) wings and off they'd go to ask (almost whispering) the stars what their secrets were. Those secrets must not be so bad, if so many people were going to ask about them. Bushy Tail watched her sister and tugged at her mother's hand, "Can we go look around?" she asked. "Don't go far.", her mother warned (?) seeing the way Dreaming Eyes watched the ships; "We have to leave soon".

Bushy Tail hugged her mother and ran to grab her sister's hand. "Let's go see what we can find here", she said and Dreaming Eyes giggled and pulled her along towards a giant maze of boxes she had been wondering about. Dreaming Eyes released her sister"s hand as they got close and bounded into the boxes. "Start counting!", she yelled and she ran off to find a hiding place. Bushy Tail smiled and covered her eyes beginning to count the time until she could chase after Dreaming Eyes.

The boxes were all kinds of colors and sizes jumbled together in rows like flowers in an abandoned garden. Giant rumbling monsters rolled through the rows and moved the boxes around. Sometimes taking them out of sight! Dreaming Eyes hid from the monsters at first, but they only seemed to care about the boxes. She wanted to know where they were taking the boxes, so she started to chase after them; hiding whenever they turned around.

Sometimes she could hear Bushy Tail's voice saying a/ the number echoing around the boxes. "Ten!", she heard. She ran faster and climbed up and over boxes to get away, laughing. The monsters lead her deep into a dead place where the sky was gray and hard, and the stars were harsh and yellow. Dreamy Eyes stared and wondered at this new place.

"Nine!"

The boxes ??? at her with ??? but some had left their secrets opened for her to go see. The monster she was following turned a corner leaving a small box standing right in front of her. It was not much taller than she was and a pretty shade of purple; the perfect hiding spot to wait for Bushy Tail.

It was getting so lonely trying to explore by herself.

"Eight!"

Bushy Tail's voice was softer and echoed more the farther from her she went.

Dreaming Eyes tucked herself into the box, almost closing the door but left it open just enough to peek outside and watch for Bushy Tail; imagining her smile when she found her. It was the best smile! Dreaming Eyes couldn't wait until she was found so she could smile the same way back.

"Seven!"

She waited a long time.

She thought about the planet they would be going to and all the places they had been. She thought about the best places to play hide and seek.

"Six!"

She had waited so long that she began to think about how her mother told her not to go very far.

"Five."

The box began to move. Then like a big mouth, the sky started falling and the ground started shaking and raising up! The outside light grew smaller and smaller as if she were being swallowed up.

"Four!" (voice is farther in the distance now)

Bushy tail's voice was very quiet now, and she could only barely hear it.

She tried to push open the box but the ground was shaking so much she could hardly keep her balance. The pretty purple of the crate had turned black... not nice at all

"Three.."

She managed to get out of the box and she ran as fast as she could around the boxes.. up and over, through and around; towards the shrinking light.

"Two."

"SIS!", Dreaming Eyes yelled. "SIS!"

She ran up to the big, black wall where the light was but it was too late! The light had disappeared, the rumbling stopped but no one came to pull her out of the blackness.

The world was silent and no one came.

Dreaming Eyes cried until she fell asleep. And then when she woke up, she started crying again There was only a ??? now, and she sat waiting by the dark, cold sides of the box for a very long time. Sometimes she would try to push open the door, but it just wouldn't move. (sniff, sniff) "Bushy Tail will come soon", she said at the big box, sniffing away tears. "And she will open you up." The box didn't answer. It only sat, waiting. Dreaming Eyes didn't know why, but she felt afraid of the big walls(?)

Suddenly the boxes all began to creak and scream. Dreaming Eyes watched as the light began to peek through at the edges. Bushy Tail had come?! She was opening the box and ???? planet When the door opened all the way though, it wasn't Bushy Tail peeking in.

The new monster had a hard, red face and eyes that held the dark secrets to the stars. Dreaming Eyes ran quickly to the back of the box, in fear, before she was seen. The Red Monster stepped into the shadows and looked around. The red face turning this way and that. It stopped suddenly when it saw Dreaming Eyes, and she was scared! But the red face softened and the monster said "Hello, little person. What are you doing here? This is not a good place for you to be."

Dreaming Eyes shivered against the back of the box. "Please don't hurt me!", she begged. I got lost and she didn't come to find me!", she started crying again. "Well, now I've got you instead. Why don't you come with me and we'll give you some food and a little bed to sleep in". Dreaming Eyes thought of how she had slept on the hard, cold floor and how uncomfortable it was. She thought of how her tummy felt it was going to eat itself. Maybe the Red Monster was really not a monster at all. She looked at his red face and a burly hand stretched out towards hers. She headed towards it with tears in her eyes.

As she creeped out of the box the lights of the outside hurt her eyes and she lifted her arms to protect them but the Red Monster took her hand again before she could really see and began to lead her away to safety. When she could see again, Dreaming Eyes wiped her eyes and blinked in wonder. She'd come out of *her* box but into an even *bigger* box! There were letters and doors and a big old(?) light shining down. This box was giant!

The Red Monster lead her through many doors and empty places, until they came to a place that wasn't so empty "You're very lucky" he told her. "This is a place for lost children just like you." Dreaming Eyes sniffed away some tears (sniff sniff) She looked at the wall of this new place. There was writing and lines and colors and words and drawings. It looked really nice and cozy. There were many little boys and girls sitting against the walls like little puppies waiting to be outside(?) but they didn't look at her. She sniffled and tried not to cry again . She looked up at the Red Monster and asked, "Are you going to help me find my family again?". The monster smiled and the sequins(?) of his eyes sparkled. "We'll take you to your home, I promise"

Dreaming Eyes was so happy to hear that she'd be taken back to her sister, it would be OK, just like it always was. "Can I have something to eat before we get there, please?" The Red Monster looked at her big, ??? eyes and ??? gritty face. "Go sit with the others and you'll be eating very soon

She smiled and skipped over to the wall with the others. The Red Monster lumbered away and she sat down with three dirty, sad, little puppies. The biggest one looked at her. "What did they tell you?", he asked. Dreaming Eyes beamed."They're going to take me home!" He didn't say anything... he just looked away and disappeared against the wall.

Dreaming Eyes stared(?) around some more at this new place. Little beds stood against the walls with teeny white sheets. Everything was made of polished metal that shined(?) light starlight She'd never seen anything like this before It was so much cleaner than anywhere she'd ever been. She shivered and hopped up to sit on a bed. Beneath the sheets, the bed was very hard And when Dreaming Eyes wrapped the sheets around herself, it didn't make her any warmer

She sat and watched all the other children.They were all quiet and shivering too. They must also be waiting to go home She let out a little smile and curled up in the sheets trying to keep warm. Soon the Red Monster was going to take them all home.

Dreaming Eyes heard the door open and she sat up in bed. The Red Monster appeared and looked around the room, then came to get her. She jumped up; surprised. "Is it time to go home?", she asked. The Red Monster smiled in a way that made Dreaming Eyes uncomfortable. And she wanted to get away but he held on tightly to her hand. "Don't worry. You're almost home. Soon you will be free again to go where ever you'd like."

He pulled her through the giant box into a world made of smoky shadows and then left her alone there. She heard other children breathing nearby, but she couldn't find them in the dark.

The ground began to rumble and roar like they were in the stomach of a giant animal! Dreaming Eyes sat down and whimpered. She was never going to get home, the Red Monster had been lying! The big grumbling kept going on for a long time, like it was hungry but never fed. They were all going to be fed to the animal! Dreaming Eyes cried by herself in the dark until she ran out of tears.

After what seemed like forever, the mouth suddenly opened wide and let in a blinding light! There were small huddled shapes all around, all blinking at the light. The Red Monster came up from the depths of the hungry mouth and smiled when he saw them. "Well, little ones, it's time to see your new home for a little while." Dreaming Eyes sniffled. So they weren't going to be eaten by the monster? The Red Monster grabbed a few children's hands, then headed out towards the light. Another monster came out of the darkness, and took her hand. This one was short and had a flat face. Once they got into the light, they saw the sun almost disappearing below the ground, and Dreaming Eyes felt like it was whispering good-bye. It made her sad again, but she had no more tears left.

The flat faced monster that held her hand, took her towards a giant spooky house. It looks like an old man's face, drooping towards the ground, with the windows like tired, sad eyes and a hungry mouth for a door. Dreaming Eyes dragged her feet but the monster wouldn't slow down. It took her through the hungry door, over creaking boards, and through an even older, droopier door. This place was very dim because all the windows were covered with boards and only some of the sun's last light peeked through, like a good friend's last wave good-bye.

There were toys on the floor, little animals and cars and blocks that looked like someone had stopped playing without putting them away. Splashes of colors were scattered around like a dance all over their room, and drawings of places and worlds Dreaming Eyes had never seen were viewed (?) along the wall. Other children sat on beds made of metal (?) and rags, or played with the scattered toys

This was not a good place. The flat faced monster let go of her hand, and started to go, but she clung to his leg He pulled her off so hard that it left bruises on her arms and then he left the room, closing the door.

A short while later, the door opened a crack and the Red Monster stuck his head in, smiling happily. He looked at the children and told them to look around and play with each other, he'd be back soon.

It was taking a very long time for the Red Monster to get Dreaming Eyes home again. The Flat Faced Man would bring her food and sometimes when she wasn't smiling, he'd push up his nose and make a funny face and made Dreaming Eyes smile and giggle, but it didn't make the food taste any better. It was very bad and made her eyes heavy, like they'd fall out of her head. She had to be very careful to make sure that they didn't do that. It would be very bad to get home and have lost her eyes.

She wanted to play hide and seek, so that she could remember home better, so she tried to get some of the other children to play. Maybe they could remember home better too. The other boys and girls didn't really want to play hide-and-seek but Dreaming Eyes convinced them. She told herself that soon she'd play with Bushy Tail too; out under the sun and sky and to(?) old forgotten places. Soon...soon...soon.

One time while they were playing, she found one of the boards by a window could be moved! She wondered what sort of mysteries might be out there, so she snuck outside of the house and found herself in a giant, dark forest.

Wind blew at her hair and howled in her ears. All around her the shadows reached high and moved in a circle like animals hunting. Strange, ghostly sounds echoed long and deep from somewhere in the woods, but Dreaming Eyes turned right around and ran back into the house.

The next day the Red Monster came to the children. "We are going to ask each one of you special questions about your home, so we can make sure that you get to the right place." The other children rushed towards the monster, but(s)he(?) held up a hand. "Only one at a time". When it was Dreaming Eyes' turn, the Red Monster took her to an empty room with a table. There were small, mean (?) lights that hurt her heavy eyes. The only window was high... high above her head, and the light coming through made the dust in the air glow yellow.

From a dark corner behind the dust, a She (?) Monster, with yellow, poison eyes smiled wickedly at her and tappeda her long, black claws against the wall. Little Dreaming Eyes whimpered and hid behind the Red Monster. "Whaat's this?", asked the She Monster. "Don't be afraid."

The Red Monster sat Dreaming Eyes at a chair at the table. She didn't move, she just stared at the She Monster. "What is your favorite color, little one?" "Blue.", she whispered. The Monster smiled with very bright teeth. "I like that one, too. Now tell me, in all of the universe, what is your favorite place? " Dreaming Eyes didn't want to say, but if she didn't, she was afraid of what the She Monster might do! "A...anywhere I've never been before", she answered. The poison eyes seemed brighter and Dreaming Eyes tried to hide in the chair. It didn't work. "Very good. Now, last question. What's your favorite memory?" Dreaming Eyes thought about it. For a short (?) moment it felt like she wasn't in that little room with two terrible monsters anymore. "I was lying with my mommy and daddy and sister on a big field of green grass. We were looking up at the starry sky and the tall trees(?). We were asking mommy and daddy about the stars, and the shapes of the stars, and the people who knew the stars. They were telling us everything" She felt tears; warm and heavy, slide down her face. "When we were done, they hugged us and carried us up to bed." "That's very good.", the She Monster said. "Now, why don't you sit still here for a moment, you've done a very good job."

"Will she take me home now?", Dreaming Eyes asked. Then she felt something pinch her arm and the world turned to night. She woke up back in the children's room again and her arm hurt a lot! She looked at it and saw a big red mark, hooked and mean; like a red scorpion.

After awhile, the pain in her arm began to go away, and she talked to the other children again; telling them about the loose board. "It would be much more fun to play outside", she said. And then she had an idea. "I know a *great* way for the game to be more fun. One person can hide, and then all the others search for them. It's the same theme... almost...except different." Curious about the world outside, the other children agreed. Dreaming Eyes volunteered to be the first one to hide. The children snuck outside through the loose board. The others waited in the house and counted.

Dreaming Eyes took off running through the forest making sure that she could always see the house. She didn't want to get lost. She forgot all about those scary things from before and looked for a good place to hid.

It was really dark and when she ran , she tripped over something in the leaves. When she went to look at it, bushing aside some of the leaves and twigs, she found a handle attached to a door in the ground. "What a great place to hid!", she thought. She opened the door and slipped into the dark tunnel with tiny little lights on the ceiling. They'd never find her here.

As she tiptoed through the tunnel, she heard voices Running quickly around the corner she jumped into a small room and hid behind a big door. The voices passed and got farther away, so she looked around the room. There was a desk with a big lamp on it, and some other things were there too. Dreaming Eyes was curious, so she hopped up onto the chair and looked at the top of the desk.

There were three opened folders: one that had the name "Inferior" , one that had the name "Mediocre", and one that said "Prime". There were piles of pictures also scattered around each of the folders. Looking closer, she saw that these were pictures of the children in the house! Then she noticed a picture of herself on the littlest pile; the one on the folder that said "Prime".

Suddenly, she heard the voices again, but much, much closer! She heard the grainy voice of the Red Monster and the raspy, hissing voice of the She Monster. They wouldn't be happy if they found her in here! She ran and hid behind the big door again, burying herself in it's shadow. "They're just samples of what I've got for you." " A wide selection of candidates for your business." "They're just stowaways and have no home, so no one would even notice they're gone." "A safe investment." Dreaming Eyes started shaking.She wasn't going home! This was the secrets the stars had and she didn't like it! Where was her big sister? Where was Bushy Tail to keep her safe? Where were her parents to make everything make sense? "Hmm", the She Monster sat looking through the pictures. She was mostly looking at the pile her picture was in. Her scales shined in the dim light, looked like hooked/all(?), painful things. She looked skinny and hungry, like she wanted to eat all the little boys and girls. "Are the rest just as good?", the She Monster asked. The Red Monster smiled, rubbing his hands together. "You know me. I only provide the very best for my clients." Dreaming Eyes couldn't do anything but stare at those yellow, poison eye in fear. Then the Monster said , "Have them transferred. I can't be too picky these days. I'll send you my payment as soon as I get the shipment. Would she cut Dreaming Eyes into pieces first? Would she bake her, like a witch would? Would she open that mouth full of white, white teeth and swallow her whole? If she just shut her eyes and tried not to feel, she could almost see Bushy Tail and her parents waiting for her on the ship to the other world. "You'll have your shipment within four hours " The She Monster ??? "Don't damage them." The two monsters walked out of the room, taking the folders and pictures with them.

After they'd gone far the other way down the tunnel, she waited... and then ran as fast as she could out of the room, and ran into the Flat Faced Man! She fell back and looked at him, but he didn't say anything. He looked at her, then stepped to the side. Dreaming Eyes slowly stood up, not taking her eyes off him, and she started down the tunnel again. She got to the door, and once she was outside, she shut it behind her. But it made a big, loud thud that echoed through the forest.

Two of the other children were outside and ran up to her; happy to have found her, but she wasn't hiding anymore. She told them about the bad monsters and what they were going to do. Then she told them they had to find the other children and hide...HIDE...HIDE!

They ran back into the house and looked for the other children. They told the ones they found. And then she had an idea! The ?????? children there, huddled together and she pointed over to the horizon where there was a dim glow of light. Suddenly(?), she'd(?) run towards it. There must be other safe/sane(?) people there and places where the monsters couldn't find them.

And then they started running... and running... and RUNNING. Dreaming Eyes looked back and saw some bright light turn on at the old, spooky house. Then she saw the shadows of more *big* monsters and animals like dogs, come up from the tunnel. Then she saw the shape of the Red Monster.

But suddenly, just as she was looking back, she tripped over something else and landed in a big pile of leaves. But this time it wasn't a door handle she tripped over. She tried to push herself up from the pile of leaves but it was hard underneath, like lots of stones and twigs and it rattled when she moved in it.

When she pushed away some of the leaves and tried to get up, her eyes saw what she was resting on, and she *screamed in fear* then Dreaming Eyes fainted into...

When Dreaming Eyes woke up, she was strapped in the chair with harsh lights in her eyes. On her wrist was a hard, cold bracelet with scrambled writing and symbols that she couldn't quite figure out. She couldn't see very well yet, but she saw what looked like red numbers, or maybe letters. It almost looked like the numbers five and forty-one. She looked a lot closer and saw more letters, and it looked like it said "Scorpio" and "AI" followed by "Prime".

A hand ???? monster claws rested (?) on her arm just below the drawing of the red scorpion. Her dreaming eyes began to cry. The poisoned eyed monster look at her with a strict, upset face. Then she asked in a flat voice where the other children were.

Against the wall, Dreaming Eyes saw two of the other children huddled together. The Flat Faced Man watched over them. She knew there were many more children out there somewhere, hopefully running to safety!

"Where are the other children?", she asked again with an angrier voice. Dreaming Eyes wept (?) but she couldn't tell! She said, " We were just playing hide-and-seek. You can't say where people are hiding, you have to find them. So I can't tell you where they are." The monster's poisoned eyes narrowed; "Can't or won't?" She knew that if she said where the others were, where they were going, that the monsters would catch up to them and they wouldn't be safe. She would not give them up to the monsters. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER!

The monster reached down in front of Dreaming Eyes and lifted up the necklace she was wearing. "Lovely necklace." She thought, it was all she had now from her sister to remember her . " If you tell us where the others are, we'll let you go and you can go back to your sister", the monster said while holding her necklace. She didn't trust the monsters. The grip on her arm tightened and the yellow monster turned around. She heard a quiet, static voice and a voice that sounded rough and grainy, like the Red Monster saying something. The Yellow Monster opened the door and went outside, closing it behind her.

Only the Flat Faced Man stood inside now; watching over her. He was looking right into her eyes and almost looked sad. He raised his hand and pushed up his nose making his funny face again but Dreaming Eyes couldn't smile.

She could see the shadow under the door, and then a second shadow appeared. Some time passed and then the door opened and she heard the grainy voice again. The Red Monster said, "Hook her up and let's get this done fast. We don't have much time." The She Monster turned, looking back at her. "Let's do this right."

The poisoned eyed Monster came back in. She picked up a long needle with black markings and yellow liquid in it that looked like it belonged to a wasp or a bee. Not in her! NOT IN HER! "I don't want it to hurt", cried Dreaming Eyes. The Yellow Monster stepped(?) over her and grinning showing her bright, white fangs and the lights got much brighter. The monster cut her necklace off and tossed it to the wall. "Don't worry, you'll just feel a pinch... little sting."

Dreaming Eyes tried to pull away from the icy hands but she was being held down all over by hard, icy cold bands. She whimpered. Hands attached things to her head under her hair. She shivered at the cold and tried to pull away but she just couldn't move.

If she just closed her eyes; if she just wished it was safe, Bushy Tail would come. Dreaming Eyes welled up with tears and cried quietly. "Sis?", but she never came. "Shh. Hold still", she heard. She hoped the other children had escaped to safety. She only wanted to learn, to find the secrets of the stars and be held safe and warm with her family. She closed her eyes tightly and then felt a sting.

"Now start counting down for me from ten and you won't feel a thing," the monster said. But she wouldn't count. She wouldn't say anything. The monster began counting for her looking firmly at her deep, dreaming eyes.
