The Society (aka SFTA) appears to be an omniscient group with the intent to help the AI fulfill her mission.

THERE IS A COMMUNICATION OF GREAT IMPORT ON ITS WAY TO YOU.
WE ARE HERE. WE ARE WATCHING. WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS.
SAVE HER. AND IN DOING SO, YOU WILL SAVE SYS.
THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO SAVE HER.
FIND THE ARTIFACTS, FOR THE PATH TO HER RESCUE WILL SOON BE LIT.
IT IS A PATH THAT CAN BE TAKEN ONLY BY THOSE WHO TRULY CARE ABOUT HER.

Enaxor is a player known to be attending the Portland Arg-fest.

This lead to the The Portland drop and it's contents; posted to YouTube[1] by Anaerin.

Eridanos later wrote about this in his blog [2] dated 2009.08.05:

I, along with a number of others who are also doing their best to help Essy, were tipped off by a group we only officially know as “SFTA” or “The Society”. They chose an apt location for first contact with one of our companions, enaxor, by leaving a number of small “Dream Skulls” around a monument of Sacagawea, on SW Lewis and Clark Way in Portland, along with a series of video messages (which have been made available by Anaerin here[3]). This apparently was to prepare us, informing us that Essy needs to be rescued, but not by anyone- by people who truly care- and preparing us for what’s happening right now:

• In an earlier blog post[4], dated 2009.07.22, Eridanos describes how he found a note from the SFTA on his car.

The note read:

While the dream skulls have now been found,
More artifacts are still to come
Yet they exist not in hand
Having their existence only by her mind -
Memories of those she left behind
She must believe they are in good hands.

The doorway will soon open
You must venture within
Endure through her fear, pain, and despair
Save her, rescue her, for time is growing thin
But only if you truly care, truly believe
You must show her that she can still dream

         FROM NIGHTMARE, FROM AN ENEMY LOCKED AWAY.

All of these messages from The Society were to prepare us for the "arduous" task of Retrieving Skulls and Navigating into the AI.
